Services for Mr. Billy Joe Watkins, 76 a long time resident of Rayville, LA will be held at 2:00PM Friday, October 29, 2010 at the Rayville First Baptist Church with Rev. Joe Senn officiating. Interment will follow in the Rayville Masonic Cemetery under the direction of Mulhearn Funeral Home Rayville, LA.
He was born in Waurika, OK on August 12, 1934. He passed away at Cabrini Hospital in Alexandria, LA after a lengthy illness.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Murrel G. and Jewel Musgraves Watkins and daughter, Donna Barbara Watkins and two brothers- Kenneth Watkins and Donald R. Watkins.
He met his wife, Dorothy, while he was earning his Bachelor’s Degree at Oklahoma State University. They have been married 56 years. They have two children; Deborah June Watkins Rogers of Bogalusa, LA, Brent Elliott Watkins of Huntington, TX, seven grandchildren; Billy Joe Watkins of Cold Springs, KY, Charles G. Rogers, III of Norfork, VA, Jonathan M. Rogers of Kansas City, MO, Deborah Joy Rogers, Steven B. Rogers, Mary E. Rogers and Jennifer A. Rogers of Bogalusa, LA.
As a young man, Billy Joe wanted to become a county agent. His studies in animal husbandry at Oklahoma State University and later earning his Master’s Degree in agriculture from LSU prepared him for service to the agricultural community. In 1962, Billy Joe moved to Rayville where he accepted a position with LSU Extension Service as a 4-H agent to Richland Parish. Later he was promoted to Assistant County Agent and finally to County Agent. He retired in 1998 after 35 years of service. He was honored for his work in farm management and marketing extension programs, the Feeder Calf Sale and educational tours on marketing in 1985 by the presentation of the Distinguished Service Award from the National Association of County Agricultural Agents.
His faith was a very important part of his life. In 1959, he was ordained Deacon by the First Baptist Church in El Rino, Oklahoma. In Rayville First Baptist Church, he served as Deacon and also a Sunday School teacher. In recent years he enjoyed being in the men’s Sunday School class.
He was also a member of the Rayville Kiwanis Club where he was presented the 35 year Legion of Honor certificate in 2000.
He enjoyed working with people of Richland Parish and being a part of such a wonderful community.
Pallbearers will be Benny Haynes, Myrt Hales, Jim Adams, Carlton Clark, Gene Dewitt, and Larry Branch. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Barry Collins Sunday School Class.
Visitation will be 6:00-8:00pm Thursday, October 28, 2010 in the Mulhearn Funeral Home Chapel. In lieu of flowers Memorial made to St. Jude’s Research Hospital.
