Funeral services for Betty Linquist Jones (formerly Betty L. Fontaine), 86, of Monroe, will be held at 10:00 AM, Saturday, September 21, 2013, in the chapel at Mulhearn Funeral Home, Sterlington Road, Monroe, with Rev. Joe Solomon officiating. Mrs. Jones will be laid to rest at 2:00 PM, Saturday at Forest Park Cemetery, 3700 Saint Vincent Avenue, Shreveport, LA.
Mrs. Jones passed away at her home on September 18, 2013, after a lengthy illness. Mrs. Jones lived in Monroe, LA for the past 20 years. Prior to that, Mrs. Jones resided in Shreveport, LA where she raised her family, worked, and retired from the Caddo Parish Sheriff’s Department. During her 27 years with the Sheriff’s Department, Mrs. Jones became the first woman ever to earn the rank of Captain.
Mrs. Jones was a proud member of the Kappa Delta Sorority at Louisiana Tech University where she graduated with honors in 1945. While in Monroe, Mrs. Jones was in many clubs, associations, and organizations through which she served the community in multiple capacities. She was a member of the Lea Joyner United Methodist Church in Monroe and previously a long time member of Broadmoor Baptist Church in Shreveport, LA.
Mrs. Jones is survived by her beloved husband, Barney M. Jones; and two children, Gale Brooks-Grant, spouse Larry of Dallas, TX, and John H. Fontaine, spouse Dorothy of Bluemont, VA. She was privileged to have three grandchildren, Todd Brooks, spouse Courtney of Shreveport, LA, Jason Brooks of Bossier City, LA, and Ian Fontaine of Newport News, VA; and one great grandson, Hunter Brooks of Bossier City, LA. Mrs. Jones also had an extended family of three step-daughters, Leanne Moore, Lorri Bentz, and Leslie Boren; and several step-grandchildren.
Pallbearers are John Fontaine, Dorothy Fontaine, Ian Fontaine, Jason Brooks, Larry Grant, and Ed Moore. Todd Brooks will be an honorary pallbearer.
Visitation will be from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM, Friday, September 20, 2013, at Mulhearn Funeral Home, Sterlington Road, Monroe.
The children and grandchildren of Mrs. Jones would like to offer special recognition and sincere appreciation to Ed Moore and Sheila Bennett for their extensive contributions to the care of our mother.
