Bethia “Bitza” McCay Brown

January 16, 1926 — December 5, 2016

Bethia (“Bitza”) McCay Brown

A Worship Service for the Witness to the Resurrection for Mrs. Bethia McCay Brown (90) will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, December 10, 2016 at Covenant Presbyterian Church, Monroe, LA with the Reverend John T. Mabray officiating. A private service with the family will be conducted at Riverview Cemetery prior to the memorial service with funeral services provided by Mulhearn Funeral Home of Monroe, LA.

Bethia was born on January 16, 1926 in New Orleans, La. and died on December 5, 2016 in Shreveport, La. She was preceded in her death by her husband, Edmund G. Brown Jr.; her parents, Percy Luzenberg and Bethia Caffery McCay of New Orleans; one brother, Donelson Caffery McCay of New Orleans; and two children, Leander Moore Brown and Percy McCay “Mac” Brown. Survivors include her four children: Edmund Graves Brown III and his wife Andrea, James Ewing Brown and his wife Sabra, Bethia Brown Bundrick and her husband Claude, and Donelson Taylor Brown; ten grandchildren (and their spouses): Ted Brown (Heathir) of Eugene, Oregon, Hunter Brown (Julie) of Houston, TX, Lindsay Bednar (Jordan), Daniel Brown, Lydia Brown, and Holley Quijano (Nick) all from the Austin, TX area, Bethia Wedeberg (Andrew), Dr. Clay Bundrick (Dr. Paige), Meg Bethard (Ben) all from Shreveport, LA and Dr. Lee Bundrick from Birmingham, AL; and fifteen great-granchildren.

Bitza graduated from Isodore Neuman High School and Sophie Newcomb College. After the war, she married Edmund G. Brown, Jr. of New Orleans. In 1950, they moved to Monroe, where they raised their children. Her spunk and contagious laughter made for a fun-filled household and many friends, which extended to all of her associations. In the sixties, she lost two of her children, which set her life on a new trajectory: embracing the Gospel and living for Christ. Bitza started Operation Blessing at First Presbyterian Church in Monroe and worked countless hours serving others for almost 30 years. She also led, with Mrs. Elaine Millsaps, a women’s bible study and worked with Pregnancy Crisis Center. Her spirited life, her joyful life, which always resulted in giving, will be sorely missed by her family and her many friends.

Pallbearers will be Ted Brown, Hunter Brown, Daniel Brown, Jordan Bednar, Nick Quijano, Dr. Clay Bundrick, Dr. Lee Bundrick, Andrew Wedeberg, and Ben Bethard. Bitza’s family would like to express thankfulness to her dedicated and loving caregivers: Josephine Collins, Linda Blaney, Amy Thomas, and Sara Jeter.
