Alice Geraldine Hand

April 4, 1918 — March 22, 2018

Alice Geraldine Hand went peacefully to be with the Lord on March 22, 2018, in Houston, Texas, just a few days before her 100th birthday.

Geraldine was born in New Hebron, Mississippi, on April 4, 1918, to Oscar Franklin and Beulah Turnage Crosby. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Clayton W. Hand; son, Gerald C. Hand; son-in-law, Frank D. Cox, Sr.; and her four sisters, Frances Brennan, Louise Coil, Eloise Clark and Georgia Jones.

She is survived by her daughter, Betty H. Cox; grandchildren, Cynthia Sanford, Carrie and Steven Patton, Buddy and Susan Cox, Ashley and Robert Parchman, Alison and Mike Bailey; and great-grandchildren, Russell and Andrew Sanford, Kristen, Jack, Andrew, Michelle and Kate Patton, Elizabeth and Catherine Cox, and Conner and Caden Bailey.

Geraldine was a buyer for The Palace Department Store in Monroe, Louisiana, for 30 years. These years brought her such joy! She loved going to the markets in New York City and Dallas every year where she thoughtfully selected jewelry and accessories for The Palace. She thrived upon choosing the perfect pair of earrings for a client. It was her mission! She also worked for Selber Brothers and Dillard’s until she was 80 years old. At the time of her retirement, she was Dillard’s oldest employee. Geraldine was a long-time active member of First Baptist Church, Monroe, where she taught Sunday School, volunteered in the church library, and sang in the Seniors’ Choir, although that was not her primary talent! She was a dedicated Christian. Geraldine was also a master quilter and seamstress who made all of her daughter Betty’s clothes, along with doll clothes for all of her nieces. She could look at a dress and make it! She also loved tending her yard and garden and was an excellent cook. Her grandchildren fondly recall her welcoming them with fried pies when they visited.

Ten years ago, Geraldine moved to Houston, Texas, and resided at Tarrytowne Estates Retirement Community. Her family is so grateful to the amazing team at Tarrytowne for all they did for her during these years. The family extends a special, heartfelt thank you to her devoted caregiver Myrtle Ramseur for the loving care to her “Baby.”
