Addie Humble passed away Monday, October 3, 2016 in Monroe, Louisiana, at the age of 86 after suffering from Alzheimer’s disease for the last 10 years. Addie is preceded in death by her parents, Susie and Cavett Boggs, her husband of 61 years and the light of her life, Graham Lacy Humble, and her beloved aunt and uncle, Audrey and Elgin Boggs.
Addie Humble is survived by her son, Joseph E. Humble, MD and his wife Sylvia; daughter, Mary Susan Humble Jacka and her husband, Ford; four grandchildren Elizabeth Faulk Hughes and her husband Matt, Jake Humble, Melinda Humble and Caroline Jacka. Three great-grandchildren; triplets, Graham, William, and Joshua Hughes.
Addie was born February 5, 1930 to Susie Strayhan Boggs and Luther Cavett Boggs in Brushy, a small community, just south of Plain Dealing, Louisiana. As the fifth child of seven; Addie is survived by one brother, Luke Boggs and her sister Audrey Boggs Sabin. Addie was named Addie Belle in honor of the community physician, Dr. Bell, who delivered her and hundreds of other babies. Naming one child for the dedicated family doctor was the tradition of the day.
Addie Humble was indeed a life-time student and beloved teacher of distinction. However at the age of six she loved being with her grandmother, Mary Susan Strayhan even more than school and missed most of her first grade year by hiding in a tree until the school bus passed the country road. Nevertheless, Addie graduated as Valedictorian of Plain Dealing High School, graduated from Northeast Junior College and then finished her degree at LSU, Summa Cum Laude where she was voted a Beauty and a member of Chi Omega Sorority. Mrs. Humble continued many more years of post-graduate education to earn her Masters plus 30, and her student teacher certificate.
Following her graduation from LSU; she attended June week at West Point with her future in-laws to support the West Point Military Academy Graduation ceremony for her soon to be husband, Lt. Graham Lacy Humble. During his three day leave, they got married on August 31, 1952.
Addie taught school in Bossier parish while Graham was deployed in the Korean conflict. After two years, Addie and their small son, Joe, were able to join Graham in Okinawa, where Addie taught school on the military base. When the Army moved the Humble family to Missouri, Addie taught school. In 1956; Addie gave birth to their daughter, Mary Susan, on the military base at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri.
Addie and Graham then moved back to his life-long home in Monroe, Louisiana, where they resided until their deaths.
Addie is most remembered by many of her students as their favorite teacher. Mrs. Humble taught at Lexington Elementary School either in the second grade, first grade, fifth grade, or kindergarten until her retirement in 1980.
Addie was a life long Presbyterian, and a faithful member of Covenant Presbyterian Church, where she was active with the women of the church. Addie enjoyed memberships in The Book Club, PEO, Delta Kappa Gamma, a Hospice volunteer, led and taught in the Bible Study Fellowship League, as well as an avid quilter and had fellowship with area quilters.
After retirement, Addie dedicated much time and love to her first grandchild, Elizabeth Nell Faulk Hughes.
